Methods to measure and monitor the cylinder pressure in internal combustion engines can contribute to reduced fuel consumption, noise and exhaust emissions. As direct measurements of the cylinder pressure are expensive and not suitable for measurements in vehicles on the road indirect methods which measure cylinder pressure have great potential value. In this paper, a non-linear model based on complex radial basis function (RBF) networks is proposed for the reconstruction of in-cylinder pressure pulse waveforms. Input to the network is the Fourier transforms of both engine structure vibration and crankshaft speed fluctuation. The primary reason for the use of Fourier transforms is that different frequency regions of the signals are used for the reconstruction process. This approach also makes it easier to reduce the amount of information that is used as input to the RBF network. The complex RBF network was applied to measurements from a 6-cylinder ethanol powered diesel engine over a wide range of running conditions. Prediction accuracy was validated by comparing a number of parameters between the measured and predicted cylinder pressure waveform such as maximum pressure, maximum rate of pressure rise and indicated mean effective pressure. The performance of the network was also evaluated for a number of untrained running conditions that differ both in speed and load from the trained ones. The results for the validation set were comparable to the trained conditions.

After that, the performance of RBF learning algorithm adopted the nearest neighbor clustering algorithm (NNCA) and the criterion for selection used a cross-validation technique. We present a simplified node-decoupled extended Kalman filter for radial basis function networks, and compare this with other learning algorithms. An experimental system consisting of a robot arm and a pan-and-tilt head with a colour camera is used to produce results and test the algorithms in this paper. We also present three approaches for adapting to structural changes during eye/hand coordination tasks, and the robustness of the algorithms under noise are investigated. The learning and adaptation approaches in this paper have similarities with current ideas about neural growth in the brains of humans and animals during tool-use, and infants during early cognitive development.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the minor salivary glands can be challenging and marked by high rates of local recurrence despite appropriate surgical resection. Management of this pathology in the base of the tongue is particularly difficult given the poor functional outcomes traditionally associated with an aggressive surgical approach. This article presents a case series of patients who underwent up-front surgical resection followed by free tissue transfer reconstruction. A retrospective analysis was performed of patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the base of the tongue who underwent composite resection and reconstruction with a radial forearm free flap. Three patients met inclusion criteria and underwent analysis. All patients achieved locoregional control after at least 4 years of surveillance. In addition, all patients were decannulated and were swallowing without the need for gastrostomy tube feeding. This series demonstrates that for select patients with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the base of the tongue, excellent locoregional control can be achieved with acceptable functional outcomes and prolonged survival when appropriate reconstructive measures are employed.

The optimal centres of the hidden layer of radial basis function were determined by k-means clustering algorithm. The performance of the neural network model was evaluated by computing their prediction error statistics of average value, standard deviation, root mean square and their correlation with the true data for normal, restrictive and obstructive cases. Results show that the adopted neural networks are capable of predicting FEV1 in both normal and abnormal cases. Prediction accuracy was more in obstructive abnormality when compared to restrictive cases. It appears that this method of assessment is useful in diagnosing the pulmonary abnormalities with incomplete data and data with poor recording.

To reduce dimensionality of the input space, principal component analysis (PCA) is considered as a sound preprocessing vehicle. The performance of the HRBFNNs is quantified through a series of experiments, in which we use several modeling benchmarks of different levels of complexity (different number of input variables and the number of available data). This paper presents a complex valued radial basis function (RBF) network for equalization of fast time varying channels. A new method for calculating the centers of the RBF network is given. The method allows fixing the number of RBF centers even as the equalizer order is increased so that a good performance is obtained by a high-order RBF equalizer with small number of centers. Simulations are performed on time varying channels using a Rayleigh fading channel model to compare the performance of our RBF with an adaptive maximum-likelihood sequence estimator (MLSE) consisting of a channel estimator and a MLSE implemented by the Viterbi algorithm. In clinical applications, single modality images do not provide sufficient diagnostic information. Therefore, it is necessary to combine the advantages or complementarities of different modalities of images. Recently, neural network technique was applied to medical image fusion by many researchers, but there are still many deficiencies. In this study, we propose a novel fusion method to combine multi-modality medical images based on the enhanced fuzzy radial basis function neural network (Fuzzy-RBFNN), which includes five layers: input, fuzzy partition, front combination, inference, and output. Moreover, we propose a hybrid of the gravitational search algorithm (GSA) and error back propagation algorithm (EBPA) to train the network to update the parameters of the network. Two different patterns of images are used as inputs of the neural network, and the output is the fused image. A comparison with the conventional fusion methods and another neural network method through subjective observation and objective evaluation indexes reveals that the proposed method effectively synthesized the information of input images and achieved better results. Meanwhile, we also trained the network by using the EBPA and GSA, individually. The results reveal that the EBPGSA not only outperformed both EBPA and GSA, but also trained the neural network more accurately by analyzing the same evaluation indexes. The performance of nonlinear control algorithms such as feedback linearization and dynamic inversion is heavily dependent on the fidelity of the dynamic model being inverted. Incomplete or incorrect knowledge of the dynamics results in reduced performance and may lead to instability. Augmenting the baseline controller with approximators which utilize a parametrization structure that is adapted online reduces the effect of this error between the design model and actual dynamics. However, currently existing parameterizations employ a fixed set of basis functions that do not guarantee arbitrary tracking error performance. To address this problem, we develop a self-organizing parametrization structure that is proven to be stable and can guarantee arbitrary tracking error performance. The training algorithm to grow the network and adapt the parameters is derived from Lyapunov theory. In addition to growing the network of basis functions, a pruning strategy is incorporated to keep the size of the network as small as possible. This algorithm is implemented on a high performance flight vehicle such as F-15 military aircraft. The baseline dynamic inversion controller is augmented with a Self-Organizing Radial Basis Function Network (SORBFN) to minimize the effect of the inversion error which may occur due to imperfect modeling, approximate inversion or sudden changes in aircraft dynamics. The accuracy of metamodels is strongly affected by the sampling methods. In this paper, a new sequential optimization sampling method is proposed. Based on the new sampling method, metamodels can be constructed repeatedly through the addition of sampling points, namely, extrema points of metamodels and minimum points of density function. Afterwards, the more accurate metamodels would be constructed by the procedure above. The validity and effectiveness of proposed sampling method are examined by studying typical numerical examples.
In this work, we implement for the first time the radial-based tail methods for Monte Carlo simulations of cylindrical interfaces. The efficiency of this method is then evaluated through the calculation of surface tension and coexisting properties. We show that the inclusion of tail corrections during the course of the Monte Carlo simulation impacts the coexisting and the interfacial properties. We establish that the long range corrections to the surface tension are the same order of magnitude as those obtained from planar interface. We show that the slab-based tail method does not amend the localization of the Gibbs equimolar dividing surface. Additionally, a non-monotonic behavior of surface tension is exhibited as a function of the radius of the equimolar dividing surface.

Ten strains of the entomopathogenic fungi Metarhizium anisopliae and Beauveria bassiana were evaluated to find the most effective strain for optimization studies. The first criterion tested for strain selection was the mortality (> 50%) of Spodoptera litura larvae after inoculation of the fungus for 4 days. Fundus camera imaging is widely used to document disorders such as diabetic retinopathy and macular degeneration. Multiple retinal images can be combined together through a procedure known as mosaicing to form an image with a larger field of view. Mosaicing typically requires multiple pairwise registrations of partially overlapped images. We describe a new method for pairwise retinal image registration. The proposed method is unique in that the radial distortion due to image acquisition is corrected prior to the geometric transformation. Vessel lines are detected using the Hessian operator and are used as input features to the registration. Since the overlapping region is typically small in a retinal image pair, only a few correspondences are available, thus limiting the applicable model to an afine transform at best. To recover the distortion due to curved-surface of retina and lens optics, a combined approach of an afine model with a radial distortion correction is proposed. The parameters of the image acquisition and radial distortion models are estimated during an optimization step that uses Powell's method driven by the vessel line distance. Experimental results using 20 pairs of green channel images acquired from three subjects with a fundus camera confirmed that the afine model with distortion correction could register retinal image pairs to within 1/88+/-0/35 pixels accuracy (mean +/- standard deviation) assessed by vessel line error, which is 17% better than the afine-only approach.

We report on a radial-line relativistic klystron oscillator (RL-RKO), which is physically designed to generate gigawatt-level high power microwaves (HPMs) at Ku-band. The 3Ï/4 mode of a four-gap buncher is selected to highly modulate the radially propagating intense relativistic electron beam (IREB). A three-gap extractor operating at the Ï mode is employed to extract the radio-frequency energy efficiently. The Ku-band RL-RKO is investigated experimentally on an intense-current electron beam accelerator. The radially propagating IREB is well focused with an axial-width of 2 mm by a radial magnetic field of 0/4 T. A Ku-band radial line oscillator (RLO) with low guiding magnetic field was proposed in our previous work. A meshless local Petrov-Galerkin (MLPG) method that uses radial basis functions (RBFs) as trial functions in the study of Euler-Bernoulli beam problems is presented. RBFs, rather than generalized moving least squares (GMLS) interpolations, are used to develop the trial functions. This choice yields a computationally simpler method as fewer matrix inversions and multiplications are required than when GMLS interpolations are used. Test functions are chosen as simple weight functions as they are in the conventional MLPG method. Compactly and noncompactly supported RBFs are considered. Noncompactly supported cubic RBFs are found to be preferable. Patch tests, mixed boundary value problems, and problems with complex loading conditions are considered. Results obtained from the radial basis MLPG method are either of comparable or better accuracy than those obtained when using the conventional MLPG method.

Since the summation of volume fractions are constant (equal to 100%), therefore it is enough for the RBF model to forecast only two volume fractions. In this investigation, three RBF models are employed. The first model is used to forecast the oil and water volume fractions. The next one is utilized to forecast the water and gas volume fractions, and the last one to forecast the gas and oil volume fractions. In the next stage, the numerical data obtained from MCNP-X code must be introduced to the RBF models. Then, the average errors of these three models are calculated and compared. The model which has the least error is picked up as the best predictive model.

To ensure desirable outcome of hydraulic fracturing based on ultra-short radius radial systems, it is required to investigate the stress distribution regularity and stability of the cement sheath. On the basis of the theoretical model of the cement sheath stress distribution, a reservoir mechanical model was built using the finite element software, ABAQUS, according to the physical property of a certain oil reservoir of the Shengli oilfield. The stress distribution of the casing-cement-sheath-formation system under the practical condition was simulated, based on which analyses were conducted from multiple points of view. Results show that the stress on the internal interface of the cement sheath exceeds that on the external interface, and fluctuates with higher amplitudes, which means that the internal interface is the most failure-prone. The unevenness of the cement sheath stress distribution grows with the increasing horizontal principal stress ratio, and so does the variation magnitude. This indicates that higher horizontal principal stress ratios are unfavourable for the structural stability of the cement sheath. Both the wellbore quantity of the URRS and the physical property of the material can affect the cement sheath distribution. It is suggested to optimize the quantity of the radial wellbore and use cement with a lower elastic modulus and higher Poissonâs ratio. At last, the impact level of the above factor was analysed, with the help of the grey correlation analysis.
Electron diffusion across magnetic field lines in Hall effect thrusters is experimentally observed to be higher than predicted by classical diffusion theory. Motivated by theoretical work for fusion applications and experimental measurements of Hall thrusters, numerical models for the electron transport are implemented in radial-axial hybrid simulations in order to compute the electron mobility using simulated plasma properties and fitting parameters. These models relate the cross-field transport to the imposed magnetic field distribution through shear suppression of turbulence-enhanced transport. While azimuthal waves likely enhance cross field mobility, axial shear in the electron fluid may reduce transport due to a reduction in turbulence amplitudes and modification of phase shifts between fluctuating properties. The sensitivity of the simulation results to the fitting parameters is evaluated and an examination is made of the transportability of these parameters to several Hall thruster devices.
We use seismic data from USArray to image the upper mantle underneath the United States based on a so-called `adjoint tomography', an iterative full waveform inversion technique. The inversion uses data from 180 regional earthquakes recorded by 4516 seismographic stations, resulting in 586 185 frequency-dependent measurements. Three-component short-period body waves and long-period surface waves are combined to simultaneously constrain deep and shallow structures. The transversely isotropic model US22 is the result of 22 pre-conditioned conjugate-gradient iterations. Approximate Hessian maps and point-spread function tests demonstrate good illumination of the study region and limited trade-offs among different model parameters. We observe a distinct wave-speed contrast between the stable eastern US and the tectonically active western US. This boundary is well correlated with the Rocky Mountain Front. Stable cratonic regions are characterized by fast anomalies down to 250-300 km, reflecting the thickness of the North American lithosphere. Several fast anomalies are observed beneath the North American lithosphere, suggesting the possibility of lithospheric delamination. Slow wave-speed channels are imaged beneath the lithosphere, which might indicate weak asthenosphere. Beneath the mantle transition zone of the central US, an elongated north-south fast anomaly is observed, which might be the ancient subducted Farallon slab.

We present an application for the calculation of radial distribution functions for molecular centres of mass, based on trajectories generated by molecular simulation methods (Molecular Dynamics, Monte Carlo). When designing this application, the emphasis was placed on ease of use as well as ease of further development. In its current version, the program can read trajectories generated by the well-known DL_POLY package, but it can be easily extended to handle other formats. It is also very easy to 'hack' the program so it can compute intermolecular radial distribution functions for groups of interaction sites rather than whole molecules.

Examination of wrist radial pulse is a noninvasive diagnostic method, which occupies a very important position in Traditional Chinese Medicine. It is based on manual palpation and therefore relies largely on the practitioner's subjective technical skills and judgment. Consequently, it lacks reliability and consistency, which limits practical applications in clinical medicine. Thus, quantifiable characterization of the wrist pulse diagnosis method is a prerequisite for its further development and widespread use. This paper reports application of a noninvasive CCD sensor-based hybrid measurement system for radial pulse signal analysis. First, artery wall deformations caused by the blood flow are calibrated with a laser triangulation displacement sensor, following by the measurement of the deformations with projection moirÃ© method. Different input pressures and fluids of various viscosities are used in the assembled artificial blood flow system in order to test the performance of laser triangulation technique with detection sensitivity enhancement through microfabricated retroreflective optical element placed on a synthetic vascular graft.
